My name is McKenna Dubois. I have lived and grown in the beautiful Kootenays since I was 8 years old and am proud to call them my home. I graduated from Stanley Humphries Secondary School in 2013 and from Selkirk College’s Business Administration Program in 2020. I will be graduating from Selkirk College’s Advanced Business Administration Program in April 2021.
Introduction
In my final semester, I gratefully accepted a student work-term with the Rural Development Institute (RDI) as a Community Economic Development (CED) Research Intern, in partnership with Community Futures Central Kootenay (CFCK) and the Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership (NAEDP). My work with these non-profit community economic development organizations was focused on providing relief and support to our local businesses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These unprecedented times have been incredibly challenging to local businesses and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to collaborate on CFCK’s relief efforts.
Department and Role
My day-to-day duties included assisting my community partners (CFCK & NAEDP) with their regional economic recovery activities and providing departmental support to the RDI. These objectives were achieved through the completion of several projects, including the newest iteration of the NAEDP's strategic report card, generating content and marketing materials for a Workforce Supports webpage, and providing support to several other CFCK initiatives.
For the report card, I gathered and analyzed recent data based on the NAEDP's strategic objectives and drafted an internal report and an external visual document (link and image below). During this process, I also made a road map of contacts/sources and a visual design template so streamline the updating process for future interns.
