English 50 & 60: Finding Canadian Literature and Historical Research Resources

This research guide will give you suggestions for finding resources for your research essay.

Canadian Literature

Your textbook and class readings will provide you with a choice of literature sources for your essay. You may want to find sources elsewhere though. Currently access to print sources is restricted so you'll have to find online resources and that can be challenging. Here are a few resources you may want to look at:

Canadian History

The first place to search for Canadian History is in Discovery which you can find on the library home page at library.selkirk.ca. Click on advanced search and in the search boxes enter your keywords.

For example, if your literature is set in the 60's you can enter one of the following keywords in the first search box:

1960's
Sixties
nineteen-sixties

Note: you'll notice as you type keywords in Discovery it offers you synonym suggestions. If you use their synonym suggestions you will broaden your search results. If you don't use their synonym suggestions then you can use one of the keywords or phrases.

In the second search box enter:

Canada

You can then enter another keyword in the third box if there is something more specific you are looking for.

Currently Discovery is set up so e-books will show up at the top of the search results however you may want to use the limiters on the left hand side of the screen to Limit by Source Type: eBook

Limit by Source Type eBooks

You can also limit your results to magazines or newspaper articles if you wish.

If you are looking for an Academic Peer Reviewed Article then use the Limit To choices above Limit By Source Type:

Below are some individual databases you may want to use. They are much like Discovery, use the same keywords as you would in Discovery and use any limiters offered in order to find an appropriate resource.
