BC Campus lists 5 steps for choosing and using OER:
- Choose a textbook that matches your course or locate course materials for teaching in person, online, or a hybrid of the two from the B.C. Open Collection.
- Explore the open textbook or course material to evaluate the content, delivery options, interactivity, and in many cases, supplemental material to improve your curriculum. Use the Adoption Finder and Adoption Guide to inform your decision.
- Modify the open textbook or course content to match your learning outcomes. If using a textbook, add chapters from another open textbook, or update the information to match current conditions in your field of study. Learn how to modify an open textbook and course content in the Adaptation Guide.
- Share the open textbook or course with your students and teaching team. If using an open textbook, provide them with a link to the textbook, so they can choose the format that works best for them (including an affordable print-on-demand option from BCcampus), or download and modify your version, then make it available through various learning management systems (LMS) or online file-sharing services.
